About HD Radio on KUSP

KUSP's Digitization Project

KUSP’s digitization project is in the home stretch! So far, we’ve reached these milestones:
  • Our main 88.9 transmitter has been upgraded for digital broadcasting, and beginning in July 2007 we began transmitting our main KUSP-1 programming in HD Radio. Learn more here.

  • Our web site now offers you podcasts of fifteen great KUSP-produced shows, so you can download them automatically to your computer and listen anytime, anywhere.

  • KUSP’s live web stream is available in low- and high-bandwidth MP3 versions, so you can select the version that is best for your computer and Internet connection.

  • We have totally revamped our audio recording and storage systems at our studios, which we had to do to make our digital HD Radio broadcasts, our podcasts, and our web streams possible.

  • Our mobile broadcasting studio is now equipped to send signals back to our main studio in a digital format. This way, our special live musical broadcasts, such as the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, sound better than ever before – especially if you’re listening in HD Radio!
We need to raise the remaining funds in order to finish these elements of our project:
  • “Multicasting” – a feature of HD Radio that will allow us to “split” our digital signal into two program streams. Listeners with HD Radios and Internet listeners will be able to choose KUSP-1 or KUSP-2, a whole new channel of public radio, and a whole new way we can serve you.

  • Further upgrades to our equipment for Internet streams and podcasts, to give you better reliability and broadcast quality.

  • New equipment that will let us show you the title and artist of the song that’s playing right then – displayed on your HD Radio.
We must be ready to meet the challenge of providing our public service in a digitized world. You can help take us the rest of the way to completing our digitization project with a gift right now!
