The Pajaro Valley Arts Center hosts an exhibit of photography that defies some of the core characteristics of the medium. Prints on display in the show “Photo Alchemy” may be one-of-a-kind products, impossible to reproduce. Artists may employ digital technique to reduce variables, allowing greater focus on mixing chemicals to affect the final image. Photo Alchemy is curated by Hedwig Heerschop, and juried by Ted Orland, Janet Fine, and Brian Taylor. The show continues through June 17th. Find more information at pvarts.org

Ongoing at The Mountain Arts Center in Ben Lomond, the show “In My Life” offers a dense experience of complex and carefully-executed work by the center’s members. The show includes painting, ceramic, wood carving, monotype and other media. For more information, visit mountainartcenter.org

The current show at The Pacific Grove Art Center includes the series Reinventions, 28 abstract pieces by Ed Smiley. Smiley works with an array of techniques including xerography, collage and pastel to represent ideas that he says can’t easily be put into words. Reinventions is up through May 24. Learn about the other artists showing at the Pacific Grove art center at pgartcenter.org.
