(Straight out of France and coming to the Monterey Bay, “NewKlezmer” quintet, Kabbalah, plays Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz on Sunday June June 10th along with the Street Rhythm Players. Check out the above audio clip to hear tracks from the band’s new album “Boxes Bagels & Elephants”).
Just as I was starting to tire of the constant deluge of”new” kezmer and “gypsy jazz” vaudeville-y type bands passing thru Santa Cruz the last couple of years, along comes Kabbalah from Marseille, France putting a whole new fresh spin on this genre. Their stir fry of funky hip hop, punchy brass, Middle Eastern and Asian melodies whipped with smart pop sensibilites done klezmer style. I can see why Kabbalah coined this mash up “Yiddish Dada”.
You never know what to expect from Kabbalah. Watch them rock out live on “Sugar Pie” from their album “Boxes, Bagels & Elephants”.
