On Monday, the Monterey Peninsula Regional Water Authority held a special meeting, focusing on the proposed Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project. It would be hard to overstate how important this project is for the future of the Monterey Peninsula. Keeping up with the thinking of the governmental officials who make up the Authority is definitely worthwhile. I have a link to the agenda for that meeting in today’s transcript. The agenda itself has links to other materials.
Tomorrow, there will be another interesting water-related meeting. This one is a meeting of the Regional Advisory Committee to the Monterey County Water Resources Agency. That meeting starts at 2:00 p.m., in the Agency Board Room at 893 Blanco Circle in Salinas, and I encourage interested persons to attend. The County Water Resources Agency is currently trying to figure out how best to allocate over 168,000 acre-feet of water from the Salinas River. This is a “use it or lose it” situation, and the County recently came quite close to “losing it.” The extent of seawater intrusion into the Salinas groundwater aquifer is a key issue, and that’s what the meeting tomorrow is going to be all about. A technical report to be considered at the meeting will discuss using the water to protect the aquifer.
