Programming

• NPR news during the morning and afternoon commutes (Morning Edition and All Things Considered).
• Local news elements would continue as part of the morning and afternoon news blocks, much as you hear now.
• A consistent but somewhat eclectic mix of contemporary music during the day, in the evenings, and on weekends. Music hosts would have some latitude in the music they play, though the appeal of the music would be consistent all the time. This is different from how KUSP works now, where different genres of music (classical, or jazz, or soul/R&B, just to mention three kinds of music we play) appeal to different kinds of listeners.
• Some KUSP-produced talk and information shows would continue, probably during high-listening times on weekend mornings (where several of these programs are scheduled now, such as Ask Dr. Dawn).
• We would maintain a relatively high emphasis on making the content available online through kusp.org, as we do now.

Signal

• The 88.9 signal footprint (plus translators) would not change.

Personnel

• Would probably require about 9 to 10 full-time equivalent employees, slightly more than KUSP has now, but some roles and responsibilities would change.
• Would involve community volunteers in programming, but probably fewer than now.

Important questions/concerns

• Under this plan, revenue would need to be significantly more than operating expenses, so funds would be available to pay down KUSP’s debt.
• Though outside programming would cost less than it does currently, payroll might be slightly higher, so the cost to run the station might not change very much.
• How would we close the gap we have now between operating revenue and expenses?
• Would the audience increase enough to grow donations and make the station more appealing to business sponsors?
• Whatever kind of radio they prefer, listeners seem to strongly prefer the same kinds of shows throughout the schedule. This scenario turns away from our multiple music genres, but it doesn’t “go all the way” to a single consistent format. Are we going too far by shifting to news plus one consistent music format? Or are we not going far enough?
