The Open Roadster

The hot rod edition of The Open Roadster begins in an Island Style with Jeff Peterson. His ‘Maui On My Mind’ disc brings us the jaunty tones of In The Mood.  Set your Boater or beret at an angle, and off we go!

Ruth Brown don’t take no mess, so hush and listen, as you may hear a young Davell Crawford playing back behind our blues lady.  Davell Crawford himself makes an audio appearance from his ‘My Gift To You’ cd.

Rhannon Giddens has a new release, ‘Tomorrow Is My Turn’ and she takes a good turn tonight, or whenever you tune in.  Trombone Shorty, Troy Andrews stage name, gets all buckaloose with Buckjump, featuring The Rebirth Brass Band of New Orleans, alongside 5th Ward Weebie.  What does this all mean?! It  means… There Must Be A Better World Somewhere…B.B. King sings with another Open Roadster surprising guest vocalist.

Artists coming to town include Marcia Ball and Amy LaVere with Will Sexton.  Shemekia Copeland and Dwight Yoakam share a seat, we rumble along to Big Mama Thornton and Keb’ Mo’, performing name for Kevin Moore.

Carter Calvert and Tiffany Austin are respectively ‘On Fire’ and sprinkle ‘Stardust’ in their new jazz releases.

Around the Bay in Monterey, West Side Story is being staged at the Golden State Theatre. Tevin Campbell singing One Hand, One Heart’?  - The Open Roadster has it packed.

Rhiannon Giddens sings a Patsy Cline tune, while in live local music news, the Carolyn Sills Combo performs a tribute to Patsy Cline at Kuumbwa Jazz Center September 11th, at 7:30 pm.

Our Open Roadster takes us to Mississippi Heat and Shemekia Copeland drives us on out of Nashville, this is from her new album, “Outskirts of Love,” her welcome lovely tones will take an encore tune, so do listen through for a delightful cover of a familiar song.

Amy LaVere is also coming to Felton town September 6th alongside Will Sexton at Don Quixote’s Music Hall, and don’t miss Marcia Ball Tuesday September 15th at Kuumbwa Jazz.

It has been a hot time on the old town recently in Santa Cruz, California.  KUSP, in our studio by the sea, sweltered along, bringing the cool tunes for warm weather.  As we ease into the more accustomed seasonal routines, the music is chooglin’ steady.

The Open Roadster gets gunning and running with an Island/ surf / guitar instrumental by the gentlemen of HAPA, from their Surf Madness disc. Barry Flanagan and Keli’i Kaneali’i go “charge ‘em” full throttle on  ’Always With Me, Always With You’  a Joe Satriani composition.

The Piano Prince of New Orleans, Davell Crawford rolls on in.  He’s city, he’s country, he’s all about that piano.

Fun facts about Davell Crawford; Lionel Hampton gave Davell his first vibes and Davell considers vocalist Roberta Flack as his godmother.

Our Ladies of The Open Roadster step in, with new misc from Amy Helm and Danielle Nicole. In Town artist Amy LaVere is right here. Our long tall Marcia Ball comes to town in September.

Our Open Roadster is not lacking in the packing, we begin with a tuneful instrumental entitled Piano Forte…But! KUSP’s own Open Roadster goes off roading to the Islands for starters this early Thursday, August 6th.

The sweet jazzy guitar of Clyde “Kiyo-San” Oshiro on his Hapa Jazz cd, evokes Blue Hawaii, thence we waft to Fiji, both the Island and performer. George Veikoso pleases and surprises with his cover of another song about a Bay.

Taurrus Riley jumps onboard, from “Spirits in the Material World,” a Reggae tribute to the Police, while Sharon Jones warms up her Dap Kings to bring us back to This Land.  This is only the first set!

The Open Roadster veers from the sacred to the secular, from Candi Staton’s “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” on over to Otis Taylor’s, “Hey Joe,”

Storm Large’s Le Bonheur wishes us rain and Bakersfield native son Gregory Porter bids us Be Good.

Enjoy the song Maria, as West Side Story is being staged on both sides of our Bay. Three great talents take part in this version, James Ingram, David Pack and Michael McDonald.

There are many new voices in our Roadster this week, Christian Lopez Band’s new ep debuts next to Richard Thompson, Martin Lang, the Revelers & Mark Knopfler.

The Open Roadster takes a spin right ’round Charlie Musselwhite this Thursday, in honor of our artists coming to the area.  Charlie Musselwhite performs at Moe’s Alley Saturday August 1st.

The Orchestra Buena Vista Social Club swings into the Mountain Winery in Saratoga Saturday August 15th.  The performers include Omara Portuonda and Eliades Ochoa.

So then, does our Open Roadster show.  Tuck a flower in your lapel when the Buena Vista Social Club presents “Dos Gardenias,”  the late Ibrahim Ferrer lives on in his sweet sure rendition here.

Aaron Neville gives us a Magic Moment, while this roadster races through some changes alongside program favorite Keb’ Mo’ – in a surprising cover.

The multi-talented British comedian and actor Hugh Laurie, yes, ‘Dr. House’ for TV fans, plays piano on his ‘Let Them Talk’ cd.  This song asks us, Baby, Please Make a Change, ” so  The Open Roadster gladly obliges, with new tunes from Deb Ryder, JeConte, Lili Frost, Etienne Charles and Plena Libre.

Wednesday, July 22nd, after Mike Lambert gets you In The Groove until midnight, that mystical, rip roaring roadster hour begins!  This week on The Open Roadster, we give you the Vroom Vroom POW:

In the wee small hours of the morning, Thursday morning until 2:00 am, it is The Open Roadster that travels through space and time, thanks to the magic of radio and your mind.

We salute the Buena Vista Social Group, as the Adios tour comes around the Central Coast of California.

Ibrahim Ferrer extols Those Green Eyes in his son, ‘Aquellos Ojos Verdes,’ while, not to be outdone, Omara Portuondo; lyrical, sentimental, sings a Canta Lo Sentimental.

The Open Roadster forecast calls to ‘Mysterious’ from Taj Weekes, reggae rings out. Blues, with a shout out to Deb Ryder, her disc says it; ‘Let It Rain’ – yes, ma’am!

Lily Frost may be cool, but her CD is “Too Hot For Words.”  Sugaray Rayford answers back with “Miss Thang.”

Sister Rosetta Tharpe looks over it all with the song, “Strange Things Happen Everyday.”

This hot rod of an Open Roadster, currently on the music show player, begins with a One Note Samba, from the Paul Hemmings Uketet.

We’ll visit, not Fiji, but With Fiji, George Veikoso, known popularly as Fiji, invites us to “C’mon Over” ~ yes, it IS a Bee Gees Cover!

Gregory Porter, the rich voiced singer from Bakersfield, takes us along, on the way to Harlem.

The lady vocalists are along for the ride; Charito, more Rhiannon Giddens and the inimitable Nina Simone.
