Tonight’s Classical Tune-Up will explore the amazing poems by Pablo Neruda, set in a contemporary context by Cary Ratcliff and Donald Grantham. The Chilean-born poet, who wrote with such power and vitality, is well represented here by these modern settings.

After this brief exploration, we will turn to a performance of half of the Op. 11 Preludes by Alexander Scriabin, as performed by a local professor and pianist from UC Santa Cruz, Anatole Leikin. Greetings fellow music lover!
Tonight’s Classical Tune-Up will explore a little bit of George Frideric Handel, the amazing British/German Baroque composer of wonderful music — the breadth of which I can scarcely note here (there would not be room!). Let’s start with a partial list…

Dear Fellow Music Lover,
Tonight’s Classical Tune-Up features a competitive contemporary — or so goes the myth — of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Does the name Antonio Salieri mean anything to you? Well, I will spare you the details of the mythology of a man who was said (as the myth goes) to be envious of his younger contemporary — a spoiled brat of a man who appeared to compose such amazing works with such apparent ease and completeness — where Salieri struggled with every note he scribed on the page. Indeed, we will hear a concerto by Mr. Salieri tonight — lest he drift off into music historical obscurity.

But first, we will cut some tracks from the 20th Century by Sergei Prokofiev and his 2nd piano concerto, in a very special recording. From there, you’ll hear some guitar duos by the 19th Century composer, Caspar Mertz. Tonight, Classical Tune-Up starts with a carryover birthday celebration of the music of Claude Debussy. That’s in the first hour. From there, we visit with one of Debussy’s French contemporaries, Camille Saint-Saëns, with his Op. 52 piano etudes.
From there, we will head into that wonderful semi-random musical mode that you only expect from Classical Tune-Up — including a little virtuosic tabla playing in a live performance by a Bay Area treasure, Zakir Hussain.

Greetings to all of you who love music!
Tonight’s Classical Tune-Up will feature Symphony No. 9 in D minor by Anton Bruckner.
Anton Bruckner ()
Bruckner is truly representative of the Austro-German romantic composers of the late-19th Century. As such, his music provides insights into the characters of more “radical” compatriots of the day such as Wagner or Hugo Wolf. However, his music combines elements of polyphony and surprising harmonic sequencing that is bold and fresh even today.
One of the challenges of presenting this type of music to a greater listening audience is the fact that these are quite often large-scale works, which often means that the playing times can be well in excess of one hour! But tonight, I decided to feed you some of this profound music, with its rich orchestration — typical of the late-19th Romantics — and pure symphonic drive. Enjoy!
I will also give you some vintage piano playing from around 1952 by Vladimir Horowitz playing one of his favorite composers, Muzio Clementi. Enjoy that as well — and everything else you get tonight on Classical Tune-Up.

Hello all you music lovers!
Thank you for tuning in to Classical Tune-Up. This evening’s program is called ”Quatre Quartets” — Four Quartets. I will honor this approach to music making, and they won’t all be string quartets, which is possibly considered the granddaddy of the form (at least we can say they make up the preponderance of the quartet form).
Apart from that, and time permitting, we’ll celebrate at least one June “baby’s” music, since this is my last broadcast in June.
